The Shipp Show | Episode 6 – The Shipp Show x The Maryville Community feat. Dr. Jesse Kavadlo

What’s up Saints! Welcome back to The Shipp Show (with two p’s and no t) – The podcast brought to you by Maryville University President Dan Shipp and Maryville University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President Justin Brewer. It is a new year which means a new season of The Shipp Show. In 2026, Dan and Justin decided to take a bit of a new approach. While athletics are very important to talk about and highlight, Maryville’s community spans far beyond athletics and it is important to highlight the one-of-a-kind people that make the Maryville community what it is. This semester, they will be using this platform to highlight some of those individuals.

In this episode, Dan and Justin interviewed the first special guest on The Shipp Show. Dr. Jesse Kavadlo (or affectionately know as Dr. NoiZe) joined Dan and Justin to chat. He is a professor, writer, and performer who received his Ph.D. from Fordham University. He is a Professor of English and Humanities at Maryville University of St. Louis, where he is also the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning and Coordinator of CORE 101: Discovering Community. He teaches classes in American literature as well as courses like Aliens to Zombies: Monsters in Literature and Film, Reading Rock & Roll, and Superheroes in American Culture. He has expertise in literature, pop culture and higher education. He has written chapters and articles that have appeared in many well-known works. He was the keynote speaker for the Midwest Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Conference and the Missouri Modern Languages and Modern Technologies Conference, and he has presented at many national conferences. And as of about 2 months ago, he published a book entitled Rock of Pages which analyzes the ways in which 1980s heavy metal aligns with and develops many of the themes prevalent in the canon of literature.
