How you can become an overachiever

 -  -

When a teach announces a big exam is coming up some students immediately start to prepare as soon as the class is over, but others push it off until the very last second.

The difference between those two types of people categorizes them into two groups: the overachievers and the people that just make ends meet. The overachievers tend to spend endless hours studying and completing assignments, while people just getting by tend to do it all the night before. But what methods do overachievers use to work so hard, and how can a student develop the skills to be as successful as one?

Have a consistent schedule

It’s crucial to develop a routine in college that ensures one keeps themselves on track with the heavy load of assignments and exams that are given out. Keeping a consistent schedule can be made possible by waking up and going to bed at the same time every day, even on the weekends.

This keeps one’s circadian rhythm on track, making one energized throughout their day. Another way to keep a consistent schedule is to complete homework at the same time every day. For instance, set an alarm for 4 p.m. every day for a reminder to get back on track and be productive and proactive in completing assignments.

First-year student, Emma Pinson, keeps herself on track by keeping to a consistent schedule. “Something I always do is lay out my schedule in my planner at the start of the week so I can make sure I won’t forget what’s due,” said Pinson.

Spend more time doing productive things

In a world full of the lure of platforms like Netflix and social media, it can be difficult to keep oneself on track in being productive. But, if one focuses on what needs to be done and less on what one desires to do instead, productivity can be achieved. It is evident that the world is full of activities to occupy the mind, but unfortunately, spending hours binge-watching TV shows is not one of them which can boost one’s productivity. All it takes is one episode to suck the viewer in, essentially eliminating all chances of work getting done.

Full-time graduate student, Nikka Bazzetta has a jam-packed schedule filled with productivity. “I wake up at 4:45 a.m. every day to go to the gym, then I work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., just to get off and do homework for a couple more hours. But it keeps me consistent and on track,” said Bazzetta.

Organize, organize, organize

Being an overachiever and being organized goes hand-in-hand. Keeping organized not only helps keep track of time and tasks, but also helps keep tracks of achievements. Crossing items off of one’s to-do list can almost resemble a “runners high” in that it eliminates a weight off of one’s shoulders. To achieve ultimate organization, invest in some sort of planner. Whether it’s on a plain sheet of paper or a store-bought planner, writing down tasks and reminders ensures one’s schedule is clear of any clutter or confusion. The next time a nap sounds better than completing an assignment, consider the pros and cons. Yes, more sleep will be obtained, but one’s academic and professional career will be harmed. Have any tips to be the best student? Tweet us @MvillePawprint.
