Fall Festival kicks off at Maryville

The weather may still be hot, but Fall Festival at Maryville can put you in an autumn mood.

Fall Festival is a week-long series of events where organizations, USems and clubs organize and compete for the Fall Festival Trophy. Everyone is welcome to attend the events.

Lauren Anglo, Fall Festival chair for CONNECT, said, “Fall Festival is Maryville’s ‘homecoming week,’ it’s a fun-filled spirit week.”

Starting off the week was the “Mr. Maryville” male beauty pageant which took place in the auditorium Oct 2 at 7 p.m. Nate Kleekamp, freshman, was crowned Mr. Maryville after an impressive performance playing the drums on a plastic bucket and winning over the judges with his charm.

Next in line is Comedian Ian Lara performing in the auditorium Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. After pursuing comedy right after college, Lara was an Opening Act for a national headliner and performed at the New York Comedy Festival. Lara can be found today at shows in New York City and in clubs and colleges.

An epic LipSync Battle takes place in the auditorium Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Like Mr. Maryville, the teams must create their routine to show off their talents. Anglo said, “It gets intense. If they’re practicing, a lot of teams will kick you out of where they’re practicing because they don’t want anybody to see.”

Brittany Pomilee, a third-year student, said her favorite part is the LipSync Battle because “It’s a great time to dance around and jam to songs with fellow teammates. It’s a great bonding opportunity especially since our team is the general body of ABC.”

The Tailgate, the final round of competition for teams, will take place on the Commencement Lawn Oct 5. at 5 p.m. Straying from tradition, this year there will be a capture the flag game. Stop by for free food, music and t-shirts.

Ending the week with a bang, Fall Formal occurs at Ballpark Village Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. Allowing students to show their pride, this year’s theme is “Once a Saint, Always a Saint.” Tickets for the formal are on sale in the C.S.E. and in the back of Gander at the booth with the “CONNECT” tablecloth. Tickets are $15 when purchased in advance and $20 at the door. Shuttles will provide transportation to and from Ballpark Village. Students are held responsible for their own transportation home after the last shuttle leaves.

“Fall Festival is a great way for students to get familiar with the different organizations competing and is a good bonding experience because we’re all celebrating Maryville; we’re one team and one family,” Anglo said.
